My latest project

My dh did really great with Christmas gifts this year! My big gift was the Xyron 900, so I could create my own stickers (or as he says, a really expensive replacement for glue dots). Plus I received new scrapbooking pens and some ribbons.

Anyway, now that I've had a little bit of time to myself, I've been working on my exploding box. I created the box a month ago, but haven't had time to decorate it or place my pictures. My plan for this box is to highlight a special day up at Silver Lake this summer - even though the whole family went, it was really a daddy/son day, and I just went along to take pictures, while Audrey hung out in the baby sling.

So I cut all the papers to decorate the "pages," ran them through my Xyron, and realized that I hadn't rounded the corners yet. Oops! I suggest rounding corners before applying adhesive. I also discovered that choosing the "best fit to page" option is not a good idea - my portrait orientation pictures all printed too large to use in my box. So I've reprinted them, and now I'm waiting for them to dry so I can cut them, and put them in.

Check back soon for pictures of my completed box!

Dilemma

For both Isaac's and Audrey's first birthday parties, I created picture boards. I made 10 boards each, with different themes (bath, first Christmas, favorite toys, etc) and had about 10-15 photos per board. The idea was to display how they'd grown in those different areas throughout the first year. Most people really loved them, as of course did I.

The question now is, what to do with them? Isaac's boards are sitting in his closet, and Audrey's are in the dining room. Family has suggested holding onto them and displaying them at their high school graduation parties, but I really don't know how to keep them that long. I've considering making them into very large books using binder rings, but the question remains on how to preserve them? I can't easily throw page protectors over them, nor do I have photo safe storage boxes large enough for poster board.

Should I just take pictures of the pictures? Take them apart and create mini scrapbooks, while maintaining the themes? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Scrapbook inspiration

A friend sent me a link to this blog, and I've spent the past couple of days reading it. The funny thing is, her style is very different from my own, yet I still found quite a bit of inspiration. Especially her attention to journaling.

I have always thought that journaling was not very necessary, as my pictures tell enough of a story, but sometimes I look back at some of my books, and wish that I could remember more detail - I think that will only get worse as I age, and more kids are added to the mix.

So I vow to have at least one journal entry for every 3rd spread.

Also, she has started a stash diet - a plan to complete so many pages using existing supplies before purchasing any more (excepting adhesives - really hard to mount pictures or paper without that). Considering Monte bought me a new scrapbook tote for my birthday, and I still can't fit all my papers in there, I think it may be time. So starting January 1, my goal is to complete Isaac's scrapbook through his third birthday (about 26 pages) before buying new supplies. I'll even try working on Audrey's new book, too. I think I'll shoot for 24 pages in her book, so that I have an even 50 pages.

So with that in mind, remember that my diet does not begin until the new year, and I am not forbidden from accepting gifts of supplies during my diet :)

Intro

I began scrapping when my son was about 8 months old. I had purchased a Hallmark baby book, and found that the pages were inadequate. Seriously, I need more than one page for first birthday pictures. So I started adding pages (it's a three-ring binder, so it was fairly easy), and experimented with papers. It was nice that I had the printed pages as a backdrop and starting point.

So after his baby book was complete, I started a real scrapbook. I have been having so much fun, but I am way behind. I have it completed through January of 2007. The problem is finding the time. I was doing pretty well until I had my daughter. Now my scrap time is divided between Isaac's book, and Audrey's baby book (I went with the same Hallmark book for her, but really added to it - I like the forced journaling). Audrey's book is complete (and she's only 13 months!), and it's time to start on her new book as well.

My church hosts a crop night 8 times a year, so I get 6 hours then to work on my stuff, without worrying about the kids. I can usually finish about 10 spreads during that time, but when I'm this far behind, it doesn't seem to make much dent. I have requested 3 hours per weekend from my dh to work on it, but somehow that hasn't materialized. It'd probably help if I had a dedicated area, instead of using the dining room table. I have designed a desk, but it hasn't been built yet.
